Preventing Oral Health Issues
Twice-yearly oral health examinations allow your dentist to identify any dental issues affecting your teeth and oral structures and make a plan to treat them accordingly.
During your exam, your dentist will evaluate the health of your teeth, gums, jaw and bite. Exams may also include dental X-rays, an oral cancer screening and other diagnostic procedures.
By treating dental issues in their early stages, you can prevent further damage to your oral health and help you avoid more invasive and costly treatments in the future.
Oral Cancer Screening
Oral cancer can affect any part of the mouth or surrounding tissues. During a dental exam, your dentist will check the face, neck, lips, tongue, throat, tissues, and gums for any signs of cancer. These signs can be easily missed by patients and early diagnosis and treatment can help to ensure the best possible outcome.
Dental Hygiene Cleaning
Before or after your exam, your dental hygienist will thoroughly clean your teeth and gums to prevent and treat gum disease.
First, they will use a scaler to remove tartar and plaque build-up. Next, they will use a polisher and coarse toothpaste to remove any leftover stains or plaque and thoroughly floss your teeth and gums.
Fluoride Treatment
If you or your child is at a high risk of tooth decay, your dentist may also recommend a fluoride treatment. Fluoride is a natural mineral that can help rebuild tooth enamel, preventing or even reversing tooth decay.
