What is a Dental Emergency?
Are you unsure if you are experiencing a dental emergency? These are common dental emergencies that our dentists should treat right away. Call our dental clinic so we can schedule an appointment as soon as possible.
-
Lost Fillings or Crowns
Find any misplaced filling or crown. Rinse and attempt to place it back on your tooth. Call our office as soon as possible to arrange an appointment to fix it.
-
Chipped or Broken Teeth
If you chip or break a tooth, call us right away for an appointment. We can help you determine the best method of repair for your smile.
-
Knocked-Out Teeth
If you can find your knocked-out tooth, rinse it, hold it by the crown – not the roots – and re-insert it into your tooth socket by gently biting down once it is in its place. Keep it moist by putting it in a glass of milk or holding it in your mouth.
Take an over-the-counter pain medication. Do not take aspirin if you are bleeding. This can thin your blood and prevent clotting. Apply a cold compress against your cheek where your tooth has been fractured. This will help reduce your pain and swelling.
Call our clinic and we will arrange to see you as soon as possible.
The sooner you receive treatment for a knocked-out tooth, the greater the possibility of the tooth being successfully replaced.
-
Severe Swelling, Pain or Discomfort
Are you experiencing swelling in your face, mouth or neck or severe pain or discomfort in or around your mouth?
Call us as soon as possible and follow these steps to alleviate pain in the meantime:
- Apply a cold compress to the area experiencing pain.
- Take an over-the-counter pain medication.
- Use salt water to flush the area that is in pain. This will help remove any debris that could be causing the toothache.
See one of our dentists to have the pain diagnosed and treated.
Preventing Dental Emergencies
Accidents happen, but you can take precautions to reduce the risk of injury to your teeth, gums and lips. Here are a few things you should keep in mind to prevent emergencies:
- Don't bite or chew on ice: The cold temperature and hardness of ice can cause teeth to crack or break and damage existing dental restorations, such as fillings.
- Don't eat hard foods too quickly: Hard snacks and treats like popcorn, hard candy, peanut brittle and shelled nuts should be eaten slowly to avoid damaging your teeth.
- Don't use your teeth as tools: Use scissors when you need to cut things like ribbon, tape or packaging and never use your teeth to lift or hold objects.
- Use a mouth guard when playing sports: Sports mouth guards can help protect your teeth and soft tissues from impact while participating in physical activities. Your dentist can help you choose a mouth guard that works best for you.
